For state employees and teachers • For MERS employees
Many briefings and hearings were held during the two-month long process, and all can be viewed on this site. This included preliminary meetings and hearings, joint House and Senate Finance Committee hearings which included 29 hours of public testimony and debate on the final bill in both chambers.
The legislation has been enacted and signed into law and this website now serves as a resource to gain more information about the importance of pension reform. If you wish to offer comments to be forwarded to the General Assembly there is a section on this website as well.
It is the responsibility of the General Assembly to appropriate funds for vital state services and programs relied upon by all residents of the state. Pension reform is critical to ensuring that the resources are there to educate our children, repair our roads, invest in economic development, and ensure a viable safety net for all Rhode Islanders, among other priorities.
In enacting this legislation, we sought to be fair to public employees, while maintaining a system that provides retirement security, is affordable to taxpayers, and is sustainable over the long term.
